Microsoft tried to put a good spin on the latest US sales of its Xbox One game console, claiming that it sold nearly double the amount of units in August compared to July. However, Sony's PlayStation 4 was still the top selling game console in the US in August for the eighth straight month.
The claims come from the research firm the NPD Group, which never reveals specific unit sales numbers for consoles, although the companies themselves have the right to do so on their own. In the past, Microsoft has offered specific sales numbers for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the US but in the past few months it has declined to do so. Sony has never issued specific sales figures for its PlayStation consoles in the US, but recently revealed it has sold 10 million PS4 consoles worldwide. In a statement to Venture Beat, Microsoft said:
"Xbox One sales are on a positive trajectory, nearly doubling sales in August in the U.S. compared to July due in part to strong demand for the Xbox One Madden NFL 15 bundle. We're looking forward to bringing the best value bundles, incredible offers like the 'Buy a Console, Get a Game Free' promotion running now, and more great games as we gear up for the launches of Halo: The Master Chief Collection, Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Destiny, Grand Theft Auto V, and Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare."
Microsoft is now in the middle of expanding Xbox One sales to 29 more markets by the end of September. . Do you believe Microsoft will be able to reverse its current trend and beat the PS4 in sales for the US market in the fall?
